The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

5.0

I am the one not running, not staying, but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity's last war, then I am the battlefield.

Cassiopeia Sullivan is surviving on her own after the 4th wave has hit the population on Earth. 10 months after the Arrival, the 'Others' as she calls them, have nearly wiped the human planet with a series of strikes also known as 'Waves'. No one has ever seen them. Only the mothership that hovers above them in the sky, a constant reminder that they are there, watching, waiting to strike again. The 5th Wave.
Trusting no one, Cassie plans to keep her promise to see her younger brother again, although she doesn't really know what she's getting herself into. Since the appearance of the 4th Wave, the 'Silencers', nobody can be told friend from foe. But when Cassie finds herself in the hands of mysterious Evan Walker, maybe there is hope?

"And I am Michelangelo. I am the master builder, and you will be my masterpiece.”

Ben Parish survived the deadly 3rd Wave. After losing his family and coming close to death, he is broken. The night his camp was, as he thought, somehow raided, Ben is captured and finds himself at Wright-Patterson, a former government center where a human command appears to be based. Ben heals but soon learns that to build himself back up, he must be destroyed. Through weeks of training and survival tactics, Ben and his squad struggle to become the soldiers that will make the stand against 'them'.

“I made a promise. The kind of promise you don't break because, if you break it you've broken part of yourself, maybe the most important part.”

As truths are revealed with shocking realisations for both of these characters, Cassie and Ben are intent on keeping their promises.

With help from Evan, Cassie makes her way to Wright-Patterson while Ben also finds himself returning, though not without resentment and wariness for what he now knows, to save the little boy he left behind.

“I am a shark, Cassie," he says slowly, drawing the words out, as if he might be speaking to me for the last time. Looking into my eyes with tears in his, as if he's seeing me for the last time.

Evan Walker. Until you know his story, it's hard to truly understand him, and even then, there is so much more that we probably never will. For him, he never wanted any of this. But now, he must choose sides.

“That's what you do when the curtain is falling--you give the line that the audience wants to hear.”

This book was so brilliant! I enjoyed it so much. At the beginning I found it a little hard to get into it as Cassie goes back to tell her story, which was necessary of course, but once it began to come together, it was just so well written and went on from there.

Cassie's and Ben's stories run parallel to each other until their promises bring them together at the end as they make a great escape. With Evan, the next book holds the answers for him....

“Why did they come billions of miles just to stare at us? It's rude.”

Cassiopeia sort of annoyed me at the beginning, I just found her a bit too sarcastic for the situation, but as the story became more action packed, we see that she is quite strong and I actually appreciated her more. She's witty and quirky but also determined and quite stubborn. She knows what she needs to do, and we see her in some serious action.

Benjamin Parish was quite interesting as we see how his life has changed drastically, becoming a soldier. He can be strong-minded but also sometimes I get a sense that he is weak. He is a survivor but I'm not sure if he's a soldier. Still, he is able to take care of himself and works to take care of his team.

Evan Walker was instantly likable, but there were clues as to what was really going on with him and this just fueled my interest even more. A lot of what he says makes sense, but at the same time it doesn't. It nearly all adds up. Nearly. But still, for me, throughout I found he didn't disappoint in his actions and words and I am intrigued to see his role in the next installment.

“His heart, the war.

Her face, the battlefield.”

Overall a fab book based on aliens, really found it a solid read. There are some great quotes in there too and I felt there was a nice depth in relation to the characters' thoughts and feelings.
Looking forward to starting the next one.
