Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class by Owen Jones
4.0
An amazing and necessary book. Reading this after the pandemic makes certain quotes all the more poignant and true such as:
“Get rid of all the cleaners, rubbish collectors, bus drivers, supermarket checkout staff and secretaries, for example, and society will very quickly grind to a halt. On the other hand, if we woke up one morning to find that all the highly paid advertising executives, management consultants and private equity directors had disappeared, society would go on much as it did before”
Basically, key workers vs non-key workers!
Jones delivers an in-depth exploration of the history, context, the (then current) predicament of the working class as well as suggestions of what needs to be done to improve our lot in society.
He got 4 stars instead of 5 due to the way he downplays racism within white working class communities and I sometimes felt that his understanding of identity politics was a bit shallow.
Nevertheless, an essential read!
