Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman
4.0
4⭐️⚠️CONTENT WARNING⚠️
"Please be aware that this volume of heartstopper contains discussions around mental health and eating disorders, and sexual references" - Alice oseman. Detail description on her website
AHHHHHHHHH I missed them so much. In this volume, it tackles what Nick's life will be after high school and intimacy. I kind of forgot what happened at the end of volume 4, but I didn't get as lost with the story as I thought I would. I missed the friend group a lot, and it was a nice suprise to see Michael being a part of this.
There was this one character that's COMPLETELY irrelevant (unless he was in previous volumes. I can't remember) that Nick's friends are talking about cause he was lying about having sex and bragging about, "clout" as one his friends put it and it felt like a set up on what age is appropriate for intimacy. I don't exactly hate that bit. This topic is good education, but the author should've just slapped in Harry or Ben instead of a random student I can't remember, I would definitely think, "Yep. Something he would say."
Even though this doesn't have that much heavy content as the last one (at least for me), this felt more chill. I love that Charlie is trying out new things like head boy and playing in a band in front of people. He really has come out of his shell. He may not think he has confidence, but he proved himself towards the end.
Things that I like about on Nick end is the switched of pov that the author did on Nick, Tara, and Darcy going on a campus tour. You see his struggle on long distance and his future throughout the story, but aftera while, he figures out what to pursue and compromise with his relationship. I think It said which uni he's going to in the novella, but again, I forgot, so I think he chose the backup option.
I love the advice Charlie therapist gave to him about trust, confidence, and control: "well, we've talked about how it makes you feel anxious when you're in a situation where you don't have control. or at least you feel like you don't have control. because you've been in a situation in the past where control has been taken away from you. and it had very negative consequences. they were traumatic experiences for you. and they might still be affecting your headspace now."
Anyways, Miss oseman better keep saying "last instalment of heartstopper" then proceed to not be the last one cause I need more of them
