This is such a good first volume! I loved my reading experience though I have a few complaints. I did not enjoy the amount of repetition in the first two-thirds (it was excessive even for a YA fantasy) and the pacing reduced the war's urgency and stakes.
Most characters are loveable and display strength and smarts when needed. I enjoyed the interactions between Will and James because they are both so clever and I liked the bonds Violet formed with Will and Justice.
The magical creatures, artefacts and magic users all work well to reveal enough about how magic works and how they fit in the war. We learn about the Stewards’ lifestyle, their training and how they acquire their powers. I loved the vivid descriptions of all the places; my favorite was the Stewards’ Castle.
We learn how the first war happened little by little, and it was interesting to see the parallels between how the Dark rose before and in current times. There are rebirths/descendants of both forces, and I love the message that even if their past selves/ancestors fought for one side during the first war, it does not mean they have to fight for that side in this war.
I always look forward to the plot twists and the identity reveals in C.S. Pacat’s books, and Dark Rise did not disappoint.
