In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
5.0
I love these all so much. This one was great, but I think my favorite is still [b:Down Among the Sticks and Bones|31450908|Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1473685781s/31450908.jpg|47411892]
This follows Lundy and her trip to the Goblin Market, where there are very specific rules regarding fairness and not following them can lose you so much.
The rules:
Rule One - Ask for nothing
Rule Two - Names have power
Rule Three - Always give fair value
Rule Four - Take what is offered and be grateful
Rule Five - Remember the curfew
Lundy, as she begins to go by, since her first name has power and cannot be used, is able to find friends, trade for what she needs, and live her life in this new world, and to go back and forth until she is sure. The going back for me was a lovely difference between this book and Down Among the Sticks and Bones, and it allowed us to see Lundy in both worlds and for her to find herself and where she belonged. We know from Every Heart a Doorway the choice that she made and where it got her, but this book explores how she came to the choice.
