All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson

4.0

4.5 stars. It's been a long time since I've been surprised by a book marketed as a thriller. Most of the ones I've picked up over the years have been formulaic and predictable, with the twist easily seen a mile off. I thought this book would be no different, but since I'd never read any of this author's work before, I decided to give it a go. Boy, I'm glad I did! This would've easily been read in one sitting, had I not needed to go to work, lol.

Told in a "then" versus "now" format, the story centers around the death of Harry's father and how the deadly accident may not be as innocent as it seems. For a book of this nature, the way the author releases pertinent information through the chapters pulls the reader along and coaxes them to continue on with the book.

Certainly, this is a slow burn. It isn't until about the mid-point of the book that we see the investigation actually taking off and the resulting actions of the characters. But it works in a way that had me eagerly turning the page.

Probably the best part was when I thought I had figured things out, only to find myself upended rather unexpectedly. I have to admit, I found that to be delightful and a definite reason to check out the other books by this author.
