I loved Leyna Krow's short stories in I'm Fine, But You Appear to be Sinking but was initially unsure about the premise of Fire Season. I need not have worried! Krow's writing is quiet, understated, and wryly funny in a way that works so well. I realized about halfway through the book that the way the narration pokes gentle fun at some of the (men) characters reminds me a bit of Garrison Keillor's humor. I loved the (mild spoiler) way speculative elements are woven in, especially in the end. It's not a book for everyone, especially as the first narrator is a truly despicable and immature human , but I'm so so glad I read it. An excellently told story about a woman coming into her own.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Confinement, Misogyny, Rape, and Suicidal thoughts
Minor: Fire/Fire injury
