You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

5.0

I hate books that fall into the subcategory of "Personal Development." They're usually just NMS and they're so repetitive and just... I dunno. I was a preteen when Chicken Soup for the Soul came out, and I guess the soup was just too hot and burned me.

So it was with great trepidation that I begrudgingly agreed to give Sincero's book a try. And I am so, so, so glad I did. She espouses a lot of the same philosophies of other PD books (setting goals and intentions, believing in yourself, taking risks for greater rewards -- you know, "The Secret" and what not), but she does it with a comedic flair of a no-nonsense, loving friend. I listed to the audio book, read by Sincero, and felt like every time I plugged in to Audible, it was as though I was sitting down with a friend for coffee who was going to tell me stuff I already knew, but was finally going to be able to make me LISTEN TO IT.

I tried to read The Secret. I thought it was ridiculous. If you loved The Secret, you probably won't like Sincero's work, because it's a LOT of the same ideas (I mean, really, aren't all PD/Self-Help/Whatever books?). But what I liked about You Are a Badass that I couldn't get into in The Secret was the way that Sincero doesn't pull punches. She calls you on your bullshit. She tells you it's bullshit. And yes, she uses those words, so if you don't want to hear someone yell "What the FUCK?" at you, then you probably don't want to read this book. But if you want (and need!) a good kick in the ass to get yourself out of a funk and into the light and life you deserve, let Sincero help you get there.
