The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
5.0
A modern retelling of Jane Eyre. Jane is a dog walker in an upscale Birmingham neighborhood, Thornfield Estates. Jane is broke and seem to have a troubled past, she supplements her income by occasionally relieving her clients of small items and eating here a ring there. Then she meet la Eddie Rochester, his wife Bea disappeared 6 months ago in a possible boating accident, leaving him all alone in his McMansion. He flirts with Jane, not knowing what he is getting into, but then again maybe it is Jane who doesn’t know.
I really enjoyed this book. It had an unreliable narrator, but you really don’t know who is the unreliable one until the end. I have not read Jane Eyre but I am sure it is a very subverted version of the classic.
