Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
4.0
I'm a little bit conflicted again. I did really enjoy this novel - it was gripping and the characters were fantastic, if sometimes caricatures in Camille's subjective point of view. Then again, this had major first-novel-vibes. There was something about the writing that made me think it could have been elevated a little bit.
The biggest shortcoming of this book is that the twists came about really fast and were resolved in two pages. There wasn't really much of a build-up.
I watched the series years ago and thought it was phenomenal. That means that I knew all the major plot points, which undoubtedly influenced my experience, for better or for worse. In spite of knowing what would happen, I was thoroughly engaged.
I don't read a lot of thrilers because I find most of them boring due to their familiar formulas, but this one was different, mostly because of strong character work. I might read something else from Flunn in the future, if I go through a phase of craving good thrillers again.
