How Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton M. Christensen

Did not finish book. Stopped at 68%.
Ugh, so pretentious and out of touch. Maybe some of these things were releveant in the early 2010's when this was written and published, but for 2024... absolutely not. He lost me on the chapter about how we're outsourcing parenting nowadays and basically ruining our kids for it. Like, I'm sorry, we live paycheck to paycheck and I'm not equipped as an educator to teach my child everything she needs to know in life. Of course I'm going to outsource her education to people who are qualified. Sorry we don't GROW OUR OWN VEGETABLES and SEW OUR OWN CLOTHES nowadays (REAL EXAMPLES HE GAVE!!!) but modern parents don't have time to do that.

I also feel like there was an underlying "Millennials are lazy" message in there, which I abhor. His generation fucked a lot of things up for us. We're not lazy, we've just been given a shit hand. My husband and I work our butts off and we're still unable to buy a house.

He also touched on how we should do what we love so that we enjoy our work. He was able to quit his job to go back to school to be a professor because that's what he wanted to do. If I quit my job, my family would starve.  I'd love to do what I love but I literally do not have time for it. And if we all quit our jobs in favor of doing the things we love, who would work our sewage system!? Who would do the dangerous jobs that need to be done in order for life to keep going?!?! I didn't grow up saying "I want to be an HR professional!" but SOMEONE has to do it!! If no one did HR, things would be really fucked.

Anyway, I can see this being more beneficial from a business perspective and not a personal one, but I listened because I wanted more of the personal stuff and it just didn't hit the mark there.
