A fun, if uneven introduction to a cool fantasy series. Some great action and some interesting concepts, though the magic, while initially seeming quite fleshed out, is actually lacking in some places. Sanderson's Capitalisation of Magic is evident here too (Privileged as the main sorcerer was a little dumb to me, but powder mages and magebreakers were cool as shit) and its pacing did sort of judder towards the end. But minor criticisms to an overall solid outing.

SpoilerThere are a lot of loose threads around some characters. The female characters are quite underdeveloped. Julene perhaps is the most robust and there are a number with potential. I thought the Vlora and Taniel dynamic would be explored which the book indicated it was starting but just never picked up. I hope that at least is addressed.
