Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia

4.0

This one was a 3.5 for me. I loved the characters, the setting, and the latinx mythology. The plot was a little lacking, especially in the middle of the book. But I love that the female character is the hero, not the sidekick, that she is latinx and from the poor side of town. I love that the book talks about institutionalized racism. All in all, a great read for middle schoolers who loved Percy Jackson.
