One of Us Is Next by Karen M. McManus
4.0
I really am a huge fan of the way McManus writes YA, and this book was not a letdown for me. While I did like the first book (One of Us is Lying) more than this one, it was still quite good. I think one of the things I like most is the characters and how they are written. They are each written like a real and believable person, with flaws and secrets, and their emotions always come off as authentic. While I thought the book had a bit of a slow start, once it got going I could not put it down. It kept me in suspense almost the entire time and there were twists that I did not expect. You really need to pay attention to whose POV each chapter is from, as they switch back and forth all the time, but it is never done in a confusing way. Even with the many main and secondary characters in the book, they are always easy to keep track of as they are each memorable. The story was well written and while not as exciting as the first book I still found myself very hooked because I needed to know what was going on. So mission accomplished on McManus making the book a page turner. If I had any "complaint" I think it would be that I wish the Truth of Dare game that the book is based around went on for a little longer. It is supposed to be the main premise of the book but for me it became almost secondary to the story and I just wish it had gone on longer to add some more drama and excitement. But that did not affect my thoughts or opinion on the book as a whole. Overall I really enjoyed One of Us is Next (so much so that I stayed up until 3am to finish it) and highly recommend it (and the prequel DEFINITELY) if you are a fan of YA, thriller, mystery. I am excited for the third book in the series and know I will be reading it as soon as it comes out.
