Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
5.0
Celeste Ng is an incredible story teller. [b:Our Missing Hearts|60149573|Our Missing Hearts|Celeste Ng|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1664802258l/60149573._SY75_.jpg|94900794] reads like a legend. It felt like I was hearing a story passed down through generations yet so very topical. The world Ng has created is horrifyingly accurate to the rhetoric surrounding Asian people back during the pandemic and going forward, as well as every other group who threatens the norm. The same words about protecting the children are so commonly used to monger fear against LGBTQ people as well as other groups. This is a story about hate and hate is everywhere. It was honestly anxiety inducing at times considering how well Ng captured that fear.
I've seen a lot of complaints about the style of this book and tech way it was set up. While it seems weird at first, the lack of quotation marks and the style of telling us the backstory, I came to the conclusion that it was supposed to eb like that. The story centered around the stories we hear as children and the ones we ultimately tell as adults and the style fits that. As I said, it feels like a myth or a legend and it serves the story so well. Its definitely not a common style of story telling and I like that because it's different.
This was an incredible read. I finished it in about three days. Celeste Ng is a writer that will never cease to amaze me.
