Habichtschwinges Reise by Erin Hunter

Misery, misery, and more misery. That’s it, I’ve just described this entire book. No need to read it anymore.

Okay, that was a joke. You can see from my positive rating that I did like this book, despite the many logical reasons anyone could have not to like it.

As you might have guessed from the title, this book involves a journey. In fact, an awful lot of them! More than half the book is spent traveling as bad things and more bad things happen to SkyClan. Animals, cars, people, hunger, sickness, gangs, literally everything you could ever imagine. Sometimes there’s a tragedy that does move or surprise you, but most of the time it misses the mark.

At this point, this has become a common issue with Super Editions, but really, some of these things shouldn’t be that long! I can see this book being a hundred times better if only it was a hundred pages shorter.

Oh yeah, the ending. I’ve already read the A Vision of Shadows arc, so I was sure that the ending would be underwhelming as in this point of the story SkyClan doesn’t really get anywhere yet, but it was still like a punch in the gut to see this end just practically out of nowhere. The best thing I can say about the ending is that they tried, I guess.
But! But! There were still a couple of really good things about this book: namely Hawkwing. I really loved his character! He had a lot of personality, had a pretty active role in the plot, interesting flaws, development throughout the story, basically everything anyone could wish from a good protagonist.

The first half of the book (you guessed it! the part where they don’t go on journeys. Or at least they go on smaller journeys) was really nice as well! Darktail is one of the best Warriors villains (in my opinion) and so I had great fun reading about him. His betrayal was really well written and a truly heart-wrenching scene. The pacing was slow, which I believe this part of the story really benefited from (not so much the journey part, though!).

I have a huge soft spot for SkyClan, and it shows, so no amount of tedious journeys or pointless hunting scenes could stop myself from at least slightly enjoying this book. I have to admit, though: as much as it hurts me to say it, this was just not good enough.
