In Open Contempt: Confronting White Supremacy in Art and Public Space by Irvin Weathersby Jr.

challenging informative reflective slow-paced

4.0

I love a discourse about art and how we experience it - especially through the lens of social justice and racial reckoning. The chapter about Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse was particularly interesting. Overall, Weathersby has given me a lot to think about in how we approach art. He says, 'Dialogue in and of itself is empty without direction.' which really stuck with me as I think about the ongoing debates regarding what art we should preserve, what we should amend/alter, and what art we should outright remove. I appreciate the topical crossover with one of my all-time favourite books 'How the Word is Passed', by Clint Smith. Such a great book cover!
