The Sentence by Louise Erdrich
4.0
The Sentence by Louise Erdich is a ghost story but the scariest part isn’t the ghost that is most certainly haunting Tookie, it’s the recent events that occurred in Minneapolis. This story spans the year between All Souls Day 2019-2020, when George Floyd’s death, BLM and the start of COVID occurred. At the start of the novel, one of Tookie’s customers dies and haunts the bookstore and Tookie tries to solve the mystery of this while living through that difficult period of time.
Fun fact is that the bookstore mentioned in this book is actually owned by Louise Erdich in Minneapolis and she has a list of recommended books to read dispersed throughout the book and in the appendix.
Although, the writing style wasn’t my favorite, I appreciate the ideas and messages that Louise interweaved into this novel. In particular, the presence and celebration of indigenous culture and ideas in a society that often fails to recognize them.
