The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

5.0

A Victorian Mr & Mrs Smith but with pirates!

The best way to describe this book is just FUN. It's so much fun. It centres around the titular Wisteria Society, a group of women pirates who are very adept with weaponry, can make their houses fly on command - and know etiquette like the back of their hands. Our heroine, Cecilia, is living a rather ordinary (she believes) life - until an assassin shows up to murder her. Oops.

I loved getting lost in this world. For a moment, my particular bug-bear was a lack of world-building, even if just to explore the history of how the society was formed and the very existence of pirates in Victorian Britain. They were also a huge amount of characters to follow, but after a while, you just sit back and let the entire story wash over you.

The book always keeps its energy up - even if I do think it runs a little bit long - and keeps you engaged throughout, which is difficult for books to do for me. I wanted to pick this book up, to keep reading it - and that's a testament to just how exciting the writing is and how witty the characters are. I loved Cecilia and Ned - and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
