A Wolf in the Garden by Allegra Hall
5.0
This book was just so beautiful. I kept having to stop to swoon over the relationship between Van and Ellie.
There are so many things about this book that made me love it, the setting/world-building. It's so interesting. I want more books from this world. I wanna know about the second realm, the dragon shifter and Van's sister. There are just so many things I want to know about. If I could be thrown into a book world, I think this might be the one I pick.
I was really worried going in because of all the history between Van and Ellie, 9 years of silence, broken hearts, and so much grief and guilt. I wasn't sure how they were going to resolve things. I didn't want the past to be something that caused a lot of drama and heartache, preventing them from having a future, but the way Allegra handled it all was beautiful. I love it when characters are emotionally mature and good at communication. It wasn't something that dragged on for the whole book, which I LOVED.
Van and his parents, oh man. I cried so much for his family. I hated his dad in the beginning but like, he really grew on me. I LOVE his mom. I cannot wait for their book.
The story itself, the Fae drama, and the mystery magic deer hunting Ellie, I was really invested in the story. I wanted to know more! I was a little sad we didn't get more answers, but it is also left open, so hopefully, future books will give us more details! I appreciated all the Maori representation, it's a culture I knew nothing about before, but I felt like it was so lovingly included in the story. This whole book was just obviously written with such love and care and I enjoyed reading it so much.
I could just spend all day talking about how swoony Van and Ellie are. They are so perfect for each other and the way they were so open and raw. The spice was just, *chefs kiss* so good. So much knotting haha.
