We follow two women across three timelines — Elsie in 1865 immediately after the sudden death of her husband at his crumbling estate and also a year following the core narrative, and Ann in 1620 just prior to events that will change the world’s perception of her family and the very same mansion. Generational trauma, witchcraft, and an eerie gothic atmosphere are almost equally weighted when telling the stories of both women, while still giving each a distinct voice.
I loved it. I am clearly doing something right in curating my to be read list, because this is five or so fiction books in a row that I have absolutely devoured.
The Silent Companions left me considering what we do for the sake of societal acceptance, and how often women are painted as selfish and sinful for wanting things of their own.
