The Iliad by Homer

3.0

“and Death wore around her shoulders a cape crimsoned with the blood of men.”

Does the quote have anything to do with the main plot? No, but it’s my favourite quote from the poem so please enjoy lol

I hoped that I would enjoy this more than The Odyssey (which I did not enjoy at all) but look, I didn’t really like this either. The last quarter of this epic poem was the best part, in my opinion. The first three quarters mainly consisted of violent battles and the conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles. There were so many perspectives that I was often left confused, and so many characters that had zero importance to the plot were brought up on almost every page which left me feeling lost.

Caroline Alexander’s translation is brilliant, however, and made this story a lot more accessible and consumable.

Ultimately, I’m glad I read this (because it wasn’t for uni, I probably never would have read it) but did I love it? No
