Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

4.0

This was the first novel I "read" in book-on-tape format. It was delightful, and I found myself narrating my own life in my head in a British accent for days afterward. If you love heartwarming stories about stodgy old Englishmen finding love then I recommend this book. The prose is a little over the top at times but for me, that just added to the book's charm.

The only thing I absolutely hated was the narrator's attempt at an American female's accent, when speaking as the Major's son's girlfriend, Sandy. The sound of it haunts my nightmares.
