Weasels in the Attic by Hiroko Oyamada

4.0

A strange and very enjoyable set of three connected short stories all following the same protagonist at different points in his, and more importantly his friend's, life. The stories each revolve around animals and relationships, and they build in a satisfying way, later stories adding to themes or concepts introduced in earlier ones. The writing is also effective and I really enjoyed Oyamada's style (as filtered through David Boyd's translation).

What holds the book back foe me though is that Oyamada builds tension brilliantly throughout the stories, with the end of the second story in particular hinting at some dark places for the third, and it never feels like we get a full pay-off to it, which is a shame. I feel there's a version of Weasels in the Attic which goes a bit more bizarre for its first and third stories, which I would get on with more, but that is largely a question of taste.
