Doctor Mars by T.A. Uner
3.0
*I received a free copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review*
I didn't know what to expect from this book but since the blurb sounded great and different and because I enjoyed "The Leopard Vanguard" by the same author, I thought I give it a try! And the cover looks gorgeous by the way!
I was surprised by the length of the book - it only has around 40 pages -, now I'm not a big fan of short stories and I just think - especially something futuristic and individual, where the characters have powers - need some time to explain and understand everything. Not given this time, I was a bit confused, particularly in the beginning. Everything seemed a little too rushed and made it hard for me to really follow the happenings.
Liberty could be a really awesome character! She has interesting powers and a strong character! She's fearless (most of the time) and brave. But I didn't like her relationship with Cal, if I'm being honest. I don't know why, maybe because I'm a girl and need at least some kind of romance/attention from the guy but Cal was just ... yeah, I guess he loved her in his own way but especially in those last pages ... he could have said "I love you." or something like that! They were alone and after all, he said he would make a little exception this time when it comes to showing his feelings in "public".
Slow Fly (strange name!) was also very interesting. I don't really know if he's the bad guy or not? I expected Doctor Mars to be the villain - and I'm sure he's evil too - but now I'm not so sure anymore. He confused me even more! And still I kind of liked him? I don't know how to explain WHY I liked him but just the fact that he "freed his mind" in the end and "betrayed" the doctor was awesome. He finally realised how things work and how Doctor Mars feels and I'm curious about his own plans now!
In conclusion, the story was individual but very, very short and I would have loved some more information about everything. It was just not enough for me and I probably only understood half of it but that half made me want to read the second book! What I want for book 2 ... well, I want some background information! And character development, for the story to take some time and discover everything SLOWLY. I don't mind a few extra pages with infos about Mars and the characters past - that would be great! But I'm really looking forward to it and I hope it'll be even better than "Doctor Mars"!
