Where Are You, Echo Blue? by Hayley Krischer

3.5

Fame is a sickness that torments you, like a compulsion that refuses to shut off. Fame isn’t real; it’s a fixation. It’s a need for acceptance and empty love. It’s a weakness, a hole that you can’t stop filling.

There are some parts of this book I'm not sure about. Goldie's attitude towards men and sex threw me off a little, though there's nothing wrong with it. It just felt...odd somehow. Echo's story is compelling and I love how both main characters have challenging relationships with their fathers (to varying degrees, yes, but still). I think this book is chewing on some interesting observations and questions about celebrity culture, paparazzi, fame, and all the rest of it; it can't be coincidence Echo is a child star in this time when conversation has focused so much on how child stars are exploited, harmed, and not protected enough. I feel like I was expecting a more intense climax to the story, but I'm not really disappointed that it went a different way. I think the story ended the way it needed to for sure. But pieces of the plot and character development didn't feel quite like they clicked into place either. Overall, a very solid read.
