Summary: Leonora is a mestiza and the sister to the viceroy ruling “New Spain” which is just Mexico. She has a secret, she is also Pantera, the legendary sorceress that helps the people native to the lands. Her mission is to protect the land and keep her sanity and mind while doing it.
My review: I go in cold and don’t read the book summary so in all honesty I bought the book because it has the Guatemalan national bird sprayed on the edges and was a little disappointed that it was about Mexican history. Once I got past that I realized that this book had a weird rhythm at times. There would be a little action and then a few pages of exposition. The book felt really long because of the amount of exposition. Something I did enjoy was the relationships that Leonora has, they felt real and I enjoyed that a lot. I also liked the magic of the book, I always enjoy that and this time it was no exception. I hope there’s a sequel in the world so we get more action and less explanation.
Who would I recommend it to? Someone who likes verbose fantasy. If you don’t mind things taking their time you might really enjoy this book!
