Solid State by Jonathan Coulton, Matt Fraction

4.0

Solid State is a concept graphic novel for Jonathan Coulton's concept album of the same name, and it can be a bit hard to follow, but the theme is clear: the worst parts of the internet (corporatization, loss of privacy, substituting "likes" for meaningful interactions) are bad, and taken to their extreme would be disastrous. This is illustrated through the intertwined stories of two Bobs, one in the far future who works in a depersonalized space corp performing seemingly pointless tasks, and one closer to our own time frame: a programmer who's become disenchanted with his job at a major tech firm that's engaging in data mining.

Albert Monteys' art is, as always, really impressive, imbuing this colourful dystopia with the sense of weird, quirky fun and humor you expect in something by Jonathan Coulton.
