Yu-jin is gifted.
Yu-jin is loved.
Yu-jin is flourishing.
…Yu-jin is dead.
When the Seoul police inform Min that his girlfriend Yu-jin has taken her own life, he’s sure it can’t be true. She was successful, happy, just on the cusp of graduating and claiming the future she’d always dreamed of.
Unable to accept that she could have done this, Min throws himself into finding out what really happened to her. But the more Min discovers, the more lost he feels. With a controlling and powerful government official father, and a fraught friendship with her alluring and destructive roommate So-ra, Yu-jin’s life was much more complex than she chose to reveal to Min. And the more he learns about her, the more he begins to doubt he ever really knew her at all.

Well, what can I say? This book has everything! It’s thrilling, heartwarming, raw, honest, emotional and the ending was absolutely heartbreaking for me.
Throughout this powerful story, Min is trying to uncover how his girlfriend Yu-jin died suddenly, he truly can’t believe or understand that she would take her own life, she must have been silenced by her overbearing, minister father surely? She was so set on her future, so determined where she was going.
When the Detective investigating the death is taken on the case and can’t be contacted, Min fears the worst. What do her friends know? Misaki, just seems nervous and unsure. So-ra, her best friend and close roommate is grieving deeply, does she know more?
I knew while reading what outcome I didn’t want but unfortunately Min eventually finds out the heartbreaking truth.
The story is told in alternating chapters between Yu-jin and Min, Min as he desperately tries to discover what happened and Yu-jin, as we gradually learn from her point of view.
This was a phenomenal read, I took my time with it as I didn’t want to rush through it and I’m so glad I did. A brutally honest look into Korean culture and strict families expectations.
