This was an enjoyable read for me! I had a lot of fun with this and found myself not being able to put it down. There were some aspects of this magical universe that had me scratching my head, but overall I love the world that Yarros built here. I wish we had developed the characters a bit more. While I know Violet and Xaden, the other characters felt very two-dimensional. I hope Yarros spends more time developing these characters in Iron Flame.
I wish they had introduced the rebellion sooner. That would have been a cool thing to read about rather than all the brooding and training. Also, I LOVED the reveal at the end! Did not see that coming!
Graphic: Death, Sexual content, Violence, Blood, War, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Vomit and Death of parent
Death of characters described in detail throughout the book. MC gets injured frequently and describes the sensation of broken bones, lacerations, etc. A student vomits on himself during a sparring match. A group of characters had to watch their parents’ deaths, and there are multiple scenes where they mourn the death of their parents.
