Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy
5.0
A powerful, honest memoir that never attempts to soften or romanticise the situation. Grealy's not trying to impress or preach here; she's just being upfront about her life and what she's been through, which I think makes Autobiography of a Face a more moving and impressive experience. The pain this book emanates is at times hard to bear as a reader; it feels so private that you sometimes feel the need to avert your eyes as Grealy muses on her self-worth and discusses in depth her depression, as well as the strained and complex relationships she has with her family. Discussing loneliness, otherness, ignorance, and stigma, as well as the universal pains of growing up, Grealy's memoir is an absolute must read.
