Roo and Tilly are sisters. They are so close, not only in age, but in their relationship. On a perfectly normal Saturday, Roo is on her way to pick up Tilly and decides to answer Tilly’s persistent texts while driving. 3 seconds of taking her eyes off the road is all it takes to change their lives forever.
Told in alternating first person views of Roo and Tilly, Luanne Rice has written a book that is both beautiful and chilling. This is YA and the message of not texting while driving shines through on nearly every page, but I hated the message of the sender of the text is at fault. I’m a big believer in taking personal responsibility and I’d rather my teen drivers know they are responsible for what they do behind the wheel of a car, rather than whoever is trying to contact them.
Despite all of the (misplaced) blame the storyline is hauntingly beautiful and the emotions of all the characters jump right off the page. This is Ms. Rice’s first YA book and the first of all of her books that I’ve read. I am looking forward to reading more of her work, though, since this was so moving and beautiful.
