The Fire Never Goes Out: A Memoir in Pictures by ND Stevenson

emotional funny reflective fast-paced

3.0

Compilation of Stevenson's blog posts, running comics, and commentaries, with an emphasis on his end of year round ups. The core of the book is balancing living a high-pressure creative life with some kind of sustainable mental health, where he often draws himself with a hole right though his body, or draws himself on fire. He talks very openly about breakdowns, depression, burn out, and shitty self image. A lot of it hit really close, but it rarely felt as in depth as it might have.

I will say the (very pink!) book hits different knowing that he figured out he was trans masculine about five minutes after it was published. He talks a lot about trying to work out a gender presentation (as a lesbian) that he's comfortable with, and never quite seems to land on one by the end. Which makes sense in context, but I (and probably he) wish that it'd included stuff from his later comics. I guess that's book #2 when he has time to put it together.
