Rat Queens Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe

5.0

I have to be honest, the only reason I picked this book up to read is that I love rats and keep them as pets. Although there is no sign of these furry, little rodents, Rat Queens is a hilarious comic about a bad-ass, all female mercenary group. It is intended for adult readers as there are lots of drugs, violence, and sex mentioned/shown.

Rat Queens is funny, gory, and all-around very enjoyable. As a woman who frequents bars and loves partying with her friends, I instantly fell in love with this comic. It helped that they didn't hold back on the violence either, when Hannah breaks her arm it is shown in all of it's blood and gore. And the girls are not completely unscathed after a battle, as is normally the case with the main characters. I love the artwork too. It is not as clean looking as other comics, which only gives it more personality.

The only bad thing about this series is that I still can not figure out who my favorite character is! Violet is realistic and down to earth, and a little quiet, but that does not mean she is any less help to her team. Hannah is the leader, and my least favorite character because she is pretty mean, but not unlikeable. She says hilarious things and (like myself) seems to hate most any girl she is not friends with. Dee's family is part of a squid worshipping cult, and Dee is trying to leave that lifestyle. She does not like crowds of people and can be socially awkward. Betty is simply adorable, and she loves drugs. Although, she seems a little obsessed with sex. But then again who doesn't have a friend who makes sexual references all the time? It is so hard to choose because they all have qualities that I myself have and some that I do not. What's amazing is how each character's personality is portrayed and stands out among the other personalities from the story. Each of these girls are individuals, and it makes this fantasy series a bit more realistic and a lot more enjoyable.
