21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act: Helping Canadians Make Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples a Reality by Bob Joseph
5.0
I was very lucky to read this book as part of a workplace book club, which included online roundtable discussion and an online conversation with the author. First I have to say that Bob is so incredibly lovely. He is really good at forming a connection with people and he also is very generous with his time. We ran out of time in the first teams meeting for a ton of questions and he instantly started coordinating with the organizers on the call for when he could come back. Sometimes our workplace does workshops that seemed designed to somehow slowly kill us via PowerPoint, but listening to Bob talk about his experiences is something I would have signed up to do all day long. He knows how to engage with people. I also really enjoyed being able to have a small group discussion with colleagues (all of which I didn't know as they were from other cities) and be able to talk about the book and about people's own life experiences. I was happy to see several people in our office participated and I think it is important that this is something I specificly experience through the lense of my work.
The material of this book is hard to digest. It is horrifying. And that comes from someone who already has a pretty bleak view of discrimination perpetrated by our government. It is a reminder that the systems we are a part of were designed with a purpose to explicitly hurt others and to allow a small few to hold onto power, resources, and wealth.
I think this book club was one of the most valuable things I have got to take away from this job so far. Super recommend that everyone read this book and I look forward to reading more by Bob in the future.
