4.5
This feels like a greatest hits compilation of Robertson Davies themes: Jung and myth, the theater, truth and illusion, academic foibles, and the origins and effects of art. It combines most of these aspects in a cohesive way and still manage to keep the plot moving. It also feels like Davies' most sprawling novel, and some plots and characters feel underdeveloped as a result.
If you've managed to get through The Rebel Angels and felt What's Bred in the Bone was a marked improvement, you'll appreciate what Davies does in Lyre.
