This story hasn't aged particularly well, not due to any offensive elements, but simply because the horror isn't that scary to a 21st-century reader. I feel like a lot of the horror in this piece is meant to shock and startle the good people of the 1840s but lacks any sort of punch when looking at societal norms today.

I will say, I did enjoy the mystery that was set up, just not the eventual payoff.
