White Trash Warlock by David R. Slayton
4.0
I came into this book because the title caught my attention and the blurb sounded interesting. I am thrilled that I found a rich world full of intrigue! What a delight to find the POV from both brothers in the story. It genuinely helped the reader understand each better and have a more rounded view of events.
Mainly this is Adam’s story and he is everything you expect in a protagonist. It is interesting to see he is not painted in the typical way for a “white trash” character. I also enjoyed that his gayness wasn’t exaggerated or flamboyant, which is the typical stereotype. It is just an aspect of who he is and that is a refreshing turn. He does have the typical love triangle going on, but who doesn’t in books these days!
The other portion of the story comes from his brother Bobby who got out and made good as a doctor. If we did not hav who’s POV in the narrative it would be difficult to like him. As it stands he isn’t the best most of the time. I am eager to see how his character develops in the series, especially with the way this story left thing for him.
There are many layers to this story and for the most part it flowed very well. There are times a reader could wish for more detail in the world but for the most part it follows rules we are with familiar with in the genre. It is a paranormal with thriller and mystery elements. Add in a dash of romance, because what story doesn’t!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Michael David Axtell. He does a terrific job with the pace and tone of the read. I do like to read faster so sped it up to 2x, his wonderful characterizations were great at the faster speed as well. I would look into more reads from him in the future. He was an asset to the story.
I did feel the ending was rather abrupt and expected more of an epic battle. However, the ending does give a hint for the next book and I am eager to jump straight into it! I do love when you get hooked on the first book and a few more are already out there for you yo dig right into!
