Read this one on a whim because it’s narrated by Lauren Graham, and I felt like reading a short fun summer novel. Turns out it dealt with some pretty heavy topics, as the main character is grieving for her mom who’s just died. At first I was rather shocked by the similarities between Katie and Carol’s relationship and my own with my mother. But those similarities shrunk as I read on, and the characters felt a bit flat as the story progressed. Like Katie apparently has a best friend she doesn’t mention until halfway through the book? Little things like that made the story feel less real, more fictional. That being said, I did appreciate Serle’s exploration into the parent-child dynamic of realizing your beloved family member has a past before you came along, flaws and all.
