Sleepwalking by Meg Wolitzer
3.0
It's strange - the dark academia aesthetic/subculture is so popular at the moment, yet this book did not get rereleased with a new cover to reach that target audience.
Sadly the book didn't wow me as much as I thought it would - maybe because it's because it was Meg Wolitzer's debut, maybe because it left me with the same emotions that I had when I finished The Interestings. While the book is a blast to read and gets you hooked from the start, the execution of the story and the character development just felt pretty lacking. I wish this book had been more of an ensemble story, rather than a solo adventure, with us returning to the other two death girls from time to time. The love interest, while sweet and caring, felt unnecessary, and it would have been a much stronger move to only focus on the girls and their relationship to each other. Still, I had a soft spot for Claire while reading the book, which is part of the reason I didn't rate it any lower. It was an enjoyable read nonetheless, just lacking on a lot of fronts.
