Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

3.0

Meditations is certainly a fine book and I do recommend everyone read it.

Marcus Aurelius' brand of stoicism is not new, but a refinement and expansion of other prior works that touch on stoic ideas. To truly understand this book and stoicism, having some knowledge of different schools of philosophy is helpful. One can see how stoicism is a building block leading towards the Renaissance, Enlightenment, romanticism, realism, and ultimately modernism.

Marcus's stoicism comes from a place of leadership so one could expect an element of pride associated with his views, and contrasted with Proverbs from the Bible which takes an approach of humility reflected in its stoic-related passages.

Apply some of what Meditations suggests and your life will be less complicated. Also, know that a life less complicated has limitations of its own. Study additional philosophies of more divine leaders for fulfillment, contentment, and serenity. Your life will be more robust than stopping with Meditations.
