Thinking Outside the Chrysalis: A Black Woman's Guide to Spreading Her Wings: A Self-Help Memoir by Trish Ahjel Roberts

5.0

I read this book for my podcast, Between the Reads, because I had Trish on as a guest. She reached out to me and requested an interview. Even though my show was booked for the year, something made me make room for her in my guest lineup. And I'm glad I did.

This book is a breath of fresh air. To paraphrase her words, Thinking Outside the Chrysalis is an unapologetic love letter to Black women.

Wait...a book that focuses on mental, spiritual, and emotional health that is written specifically for Black women??

Yes, GIRL!

Each chapter is called a drop and in each one, she boldly shares experiences in her life and how she worked through them.

Reading this book is just like talking to Trish in person. It is a cathartic release and specifically addresses how the struggles we deal with as Black women in America take their toll on our mental and physical health. Then, with no judgment, she offers ways to productively work through these issues and provides various resources in the form of books, songs, movies, AND mental health professionals who can aid you in your journey to being a healthy, joyful human being.

AND, Trish isn't just some woman who decided to write another self-help book. She's a self-actualization coach, yoga and meditation instructor, reiki practitioner, and founder of HoneyButterflyz Wellness & Transformation. If that isn't enough to get you to read her book, she also has ten years of Buddhist study at Kadampa Meditation Center in Atlanta, GA, and TWENTY years of yoga experience.

I'm telling you, this book is worth its weight in gold.
