I've been meaning to read this one for a while because The Raven Cycle series was my EVERYTHING when I was younger.
The writing is still extremely beautiful, and I'm glad that Ronan, whom I adore, is getting his chance to shine. However, while I knew it was going to be a new cast of characters going in, these ones just aren't as easy to like as the Aglionby Boys (and Blue and her family) had been. The first books were full of magic and wonder, whereas this first installment feels like it's dealing with the "behind the scenes" of said wonder, dissecting the magic until it's mundane. I'm not a fan of where the worldbuilding is going with the Visionaries, either.
Dreams feel like a solution to too much of the plot's main conflict, and the stakes don't feel serious. It felt like I was reading (or, listening to) a pastiche of the first series.
