The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson
5.0
THIS WAS EVERYTHING! This was such an phenomenal concept, a Carrie retelling but with racial discrimination. I recently watched Imitation of Life so having this book have the tragic mulatto archetype made me understand and empathize with Maddy so much more. Tiffany D. Jackson is just masterful in the way she creates stories that highlight real issues of systemic racism with new and unique characters and stories. The main Black characters of this book were so much multi-dimensional and I loved how differently they navigated being in this racist southern town. Kenny and Maddy were so interesting because even though Maddy passed and was obvious in the way she hid her race, Kenny almost did the same by separating himself from the other Black kids and trying to erase his Blackness to assimilate with his white friends. MY FAVORITE TIFFANY D. JACKSON BOOK WOW!
