This may be the Stephen King book for me, having despaired over how much I enjoyed reading “It” and yet how insane and borderline off putting I found like fifty percent of the plot.
Doctor Sleep doesn’t quite reach King’s highest highs writing wise, but it is much more comprehensible and far more pleasant to read as a woman. The exploration of addiction and recovery is exceptional, so well written and engaging, and Danny is a great protagonist. Abra doesn’t always work too well on her own, but in combination with Concetta or Dan she made for a very interesting plot. The villains are definitely not King’s scariest in my opinion, but their dynamic is very intriguing as well.
And, much like my other experiences with King’s work, the finale is oddly short and lacklustre, but he makes up for it with a beautiful epilogue - which felt more in tune with the rest of the book than a huge action-heavy finale anyway.
The idea of having the immortal villains be threatened bymeasles seems a little silly. But also very Stephen King.
