Ontkleed niet naakt staan. Hoe vindt een Roomse priester zijn weg? by Pierre Valkering

2.0

"Ontkleed maar niet naakt staan" by Pierre Valkering caused quite a stir when the parish priest presented it on the 25th anniversary of his ordination. In the book, Valkering reveals in graphic detail how he led a double life, hiding his active homosexual relationships, obsessions, and addictions from the public eye.

Following the book's release, Valkering was relieved of his pastoral duties by his bishop, a decision he initially contested in Rome. However, the Vatican upheld the measures.

The book is a peculiar mix of personal confessions, justified by the idea that repression leads to misery, and a critique of the moral ambiguity within the Church, which often turns a blind eye to abuse while condemning homosexual activity.

Valkering shares nuanced views on the complex negotiation process with scripture regarding its moral implications but also offers surprisingly naive takes on the pornography industry, bordering on denial of its true nature and destructive consequences.

The book concludes with a somewhat forced correspondence between Valkering and one of his proofreaders, who warns him about the potential fallout from publishing his confessions. At no point does Valkering seem to consider the hurt his revelations might cause to the parishioners he served as a priest.

Valkering believes his decision to tell the truth is a wake-up call to a Church that, according to him, fails to be honest and refuses to rethink its views on sexuality. However, doesn't this book reveal that this has been exactly his own problem for 25 years?
