The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan

5.0

You'd think anti-science people are one of the biggest problems of this world, but I completely forgot about the clan that believes that they believe in science, but are in fact believing and promoting pseudoscience. Somehow I feel they are more harmful than anti-science people, because they have the power to impact and influence people who actually want to be on the side of science. Astrology, Feng Shui, Scientific racism, UFOs, and most of the social-media articles that start with "According to science..." are some of the examples.

But Carl Sagan goes really deep into this subject and encourages people to develop critical and skeptical thinking by writing some of the most profound statements I have ever read. He does that and also manages to criticize organized religion without sounding obnoxious, condescending, or arrogant. But that's just Sagan being Sagan. Only he could do that. One of the quotes that I loved from the book was, "It is morally as bad not to care whether a thing is true or not, so long as it makes you feel good, as it is not to care how you got your money as long as you have got it."

The only issue I had with this book is that it was too heavy in content, and it took me a long time to finish it. I had to taking frequent breaks from reading it.
