I don’t know if there’s something wrong with me that I didn’t find this nearly as disturbing or shocking as I expected from the other reviews. Maybe it's just because I get so annoyed by unhealthy relationship dynamics that the body horror doesn't even phase me. 

I get what he was going for, and the meaning within the story. I just expected it to be something that would actually make me uneasy and it didn't do that.
