Cassiel's Servant by Jacqueline Carey

4.0

First, I want to thank Tor for the ARC I received. I have been a fan of the Kushiel series for a long while now. I was ecstatic when I learned Joscelin was getting his own book.

For new readers, I would not recommend this book until you have read Kushiel's Legacy. This story was Phedre's condensed and so there was a lot of detail left out. Of course, we couldn't know everything going on Phedre's end through Joscelin's eyes, but because of this, the story didn't hold as much of an impact for me. It helped significantly that I already knew what had happened. Otherwise, I think I would have had more questions.

This book took a little while to pull me in, and even when it did, the reading was slow going. I didn't think the story really picked up until the last two hundred pages or so. I loved learning about how Joscelin found his way into Cassiel's service. And that line with Selwyn talking about Melisande, "She's only a woman." Gave me literal chills!

As the story progresses we see Joscelin war over his feeling toward Phedre and whether what he is feeling is right or wrong. As the story neared its end, I felt the magic I did when first reading Kushiel's Dart and was grinning from ear to ear. Terre D'Ange and all of the characters within its realm are truly something special.

I'm so thankful Carey decided to bring us back to this story that will forever live in my heart.
