Wilkerson combines the biographies of three Black Americans who left the South during what is now known as The Great Migration. Their stories epitomize the experience of the millions like them who took the same journey. Wilkerson argues that the migrants who made the journey were quite successful in establishing themselves, and that the racism and depravity of Northern Cities was at fault for corrupting many of the children of these migrants (not the other way around). Wilkerson is a wonderful writer, and these very human stories of struggle and striving illuminate the Jim Crow era of America in a much more personal way than many of the textbook examples taught in schools. The Great Migration was a key movement in the development of modern America in many ways, and it is a story that we as Americans should all be cognizant of. I highly recommend, definitely worth the high page count.
